ReliaBilt Windows FAQ

Find our ReliaBilt windows FAQ below. Here we’ll look at all of the common questions we get about ReliaBilt windows. If you have a question that isn’t answered we invite you to post a comment at the bottom to ask your question. We read all of the comments and will be happy to answer your question for everyone to see.

Who makes ReliaBilt windows?

ReliaBilt windows are made by Atrium windows and they are sold at Lowes stores. Atrium windows are known to be a low cost option and typically aren’t the nicest windows out there. Box stores are also known for selling very cheap vinyl windows that are not very nice. If you’re looking at ReliaBilt windows my opinion would be that you should look for another option.

Can you only get ReliaBilt windows at Lowes stores?

Yes. The ReliaBilt brand name is only available at Lowes stores, but Atrium windows are available from other building products distributers. You can get basically the same windows from other places, but you might not want to. Atrium windows are not the nicest options and you can find more info about Atrium windows including reviews and customer feedback here.

Is the ReliaBilt window warranty any good?

It’s better than you might expect considering how cheap the windows are. You should be aware of the limitations if you’re considering buying these windows. For example the new construction warranty only covers labor for one year and the glass breakage coverage is optional so it may not be included in your order.

When we see people who are upset about their window warranty it’s usually because those people didn’t read the warranty when they bought their windows. Read the warranty and understand what is covered and you’ll likely have a happier window shopping experience.

Are ReliaBilt windows any good?

Not really. ReliaBilt windows are generally a very cheap products. Cheap products like that are what give vinyl windows a bad reputation. There are other window options that are much nicer. If you’re considering ReliaBilt windows it’s my opinion that you should buy another window product instead. Find window reviews here to find a better solution.

Should you buy windows from Lowes?

No. Box stores generally only offer low quality window products and their window installation programs don’t have the best reputations. It seems that box stores could do a great job at selling and installing replacement windows, but they don’t do it. I would suggest looking for a better option.

Is Lowes or Home Depot good at installing windows?

No. In my experience Lowes or Home Depot are not a very good place to by new windows. It can feel convenient to walk into a box store and order windows, but they’re not known for providing great quality. Box stores use sub contractor installers to install the windows and we hear from customers who were unhappy with that experience. A company that specializes in replacement windows will usually offer nicer windows and better service.

How much should ReliaBilt windows cost?

ReliaBilt windows are a very low cost option so they’ll be on the cheaper end of the spectrum. Stock windows in Lowes stores will likely cost something like $250 or $300. Beware that these are super cheap windows and they’re not nearly as nice as windows you can get from more specialized dealers or nicer window companies. Find more info on 2022 replacement window prices here.

Are ReliaBilt windows in stock for immediate pickup?

Yes. Lowes stores will generally have ReliaBilt windows in stock so you can pick them up right away. The downside to this is that you have to pick from one of the sizes that they happen to have on the shelf. Most other vinyl windows are custom made so you can order the exact size you want.

The advantage to standard size windows is that you can get them right away. Ultimately the windows will be in the house for decades so it’s usually best to get custom sized windows that will fit just right, even if it takes a few weeks longer.

Are custom windows better than ReliaBilt windows at Lowes?

Yes. It is always recommended to get custom windows that fit the openings just right. This is less critical with new construction. With new construction you can frame the openings to fit the windows. When replacing existing windows you typically don’t change the size of the opening. In a replacement project a custom sized window will be the recommend solution to ensure an exact fit.

Are windows from Lowes better than Home Depot?

No. The stock windows at both Lowes and Home Depot are pretty similar. They’re both very low end options. Box stores generally sell the cheapest possible windows so they are not recommended options. Find replacement window reviews here to find a better choice.

Atrium Windows FAQ

Find our Atrium windows FAQ below. Here we’ll look at all of the common questions we get about Atrium windows. If you have a question that isn’t answered we invite you to post a comment at the bottom to ask your question. We read all of the comments and will be happy to answer your question for everyone to see.

Should you buy Atrium windows?

I wouldn’t. Atrium has been a low cost producer of vinyl windows. Years ago I worked in window manufacturing with someone who had previously worked as a production manager for Atrium at one of their plants. He had some hilarious stories about quality control at the Atrium windows plant. To be fair that was several years ago so it’s always possible they can get better. You can see the comments from our readers about their experience with Atrium windows on this page. It sounds like some people are still having problems.

Is the Atrium window warranty any good?

Yes. The warranty on the Atrium windows is pretty solid. The warranty on Atrium replacement windows is a lifetime warranty that includes glass breakage. There is no labor coverage in the Atrium warranty so that’s something to be aware of. The warranty for Atrium new construction windows is also different so you’d want to understand that. Find more info on Atrium windows here.

Who owns Atrium windows?

Atrium is owned by Ply Gem. Ply Gem is one of the largest window manufacturing companies in the country. They make many window brands including Great Lakes, Silver Line, American Craftsman and Simonton. Atrium also makes the Reliabilt window line that is sold at Lowes.

Does Atrium make Reliabilt windows at Lowes?

Yes. The Reliabilt window line that is available at Lowes stores is made by Atrium windows. Atrium is known to be a low cost producer. In my experience these windows are not the nicest products out there. I would suggest looking for another option rather than purchasing Reliabilt windows.

Does Atrium make new construction and replacement windows?

Yes. Atrium had been big in the new construction market. New construction windows are often the cheapest and lowest quality vinyl windows out there. Atrium also makes replacement windows. Based on the feedback we see from readers here there are still quality issues. My guess would be the quality issues stem from their history of being a very low cost producer. It’s hard to make the best windows when you’re also trying to make the cheapest windows.

Does Atrium make black windows?

No. Atrium vinyl windows come in white, almond and clay. They do offer a black painted finish for the exterior on a white window. If you order windows like that you’ll get a painted black finish on the exterior and white on the interior. Many vinyl window manufacturers will offer windows with this color combination.

Are Atrium windows energy efficient?

They are not as efficient as other window brands. Like most vinyl windows, Atrium windows are often custom made. You can order a variety of efficacy packages. There are more efficient and less efficient packages available. Being a low cost producer means Atrium doesn’t offer the same range of efficiency options that you’ll see from higher quality manufacturers. Atrium’s parent company, Ply Gem, also makes other brands like Simonton and Great Lakes and you can find more efficient options from those brands.

Does the Atrium window warranty cover glass breakage?

Sometimes. A glass breakage warranty is standard on the Atrium 8900 series windows and it’s optional on the other Atrium window models. If you want to include glass breakage coverage be sure that your dealer includes in when you place your window order.

How much should Atrium windows cost?

The retail pricing for replacement windows will vary quite a lot based on the specifics of the project and the commission that the salesman wants to make. Historically Atrium windows is a low cost producer so they’ll typically be on the lower end of the price spectrum. You can find more info on 2022 window pricing here.

How long does it take to get Atrium windows?

All custom windows have been taking longer than usual lately. Atrium tends to have fast lead times. I would expect you’ll see manufacturing times of 3-6 weeks for common models and options. Some features can come with extended lead times. For example, painted exterior finishes will often have an extended lead time. Find more info about how long it takes to get windows in 2022 here.

Great Lakes Windows FAQ

Find our Great Lakes windows FAQ below. Here we’ll look at all of the common questions we get about Great Lakes windows. If you have a question that isn’t answered we invite you to post a comment at the bottom to ask your question. We read all of the comments and will be happy to answer your question for everyone to see.

Who owns Great Lakes windows?

Great Lakes is owned by Ply Gem which is owned by Cornerstone Building Brands. Ply Gem has been in the building products industry for a very long time and they produce several window lines including Atrium, American Craftsman, Simonton and Silver Line in addition to Great Lakes. Find our Great Lakes windows reviews here.

Are Great Lakes windows any good?

They’re decent, but often over priced in my experience. Great Lakes is the highest priced window brand made by Ply Gem. Ply Gem also produces some of the cheapest windows out there as well as Simonton which is their mid-range line. The Great Lakes windows are perfectly fine, but their dealers often leave something to be desired. Learn about common window sales tactics here to avoid common traps.

Is the warranty on Great Lakes windows any good?

Yes. Great Lakes offers a lifetime warranty on their windows. Since they’re owned by a large company with a significant history in the building products industry it’s likely they’ll be around to honor the warranty for a long time. You should read and understand the warranty before you make a purchase so you’re not surprised later.

How much should Great Lakes windows cost?

The pricing for Great Lakes windows can vary quite a lot depending on the dealer and the salesperson. Often times window salespeople have a lot of discretion when pricing projects and the higher the retail price the higher the commission. This is not always good for the homeowner. You can find more info on 2022 replacement window prices here.

How long does it take to get Great Lakes windows?

The timing for custom manufacturing has been extended since the corona virus took over the world. Lead times for almost all windows are extended. It’s common to see manufacturing times in the range of 6-8 weeks. The total time a project takes will be longer as it takes some time for measuring and scheduling the installation. Find more info on how long it takes to get windows in 2022 here.

What window models does Great Lakes offer?

Great Lakes makes three main window lines. They are EcoSmart, Comfort Smart and Harbor Light. The EcoSmart is the lower end and Harbor Light is the higher end (and most expensive) option. Find detailed Great Lakes window reviews here.

Why are Great Lakes window salesmen so pushy?

It’s the business model. I’m sure there are exceptions, but brands like Great Lakes are designed to be sold through local window dealers who generally still operate like it’s 1975. The old fashioned “buy today” sales process is still alive and well in the replacement window industry. Great Lakes is known in the industry for their focus on sales training and you’ll often see that from their dealers.

Should you buy Great Lakes windows?

I wouldn’t. The windows made by Great Lakes are perfectly fine. There’s nothing inherently wrong with them, but the sales process can be challenging and the prices can be high. It just doesn’t make a lot of sense to buy these windows in 2022 in my humble opinion. Of course if you find a great dealer and reasonable pricing you could get a perfectly fine result.

Are Great Lakes windows energy efficient?

Yes. The windows made by Great Lakes are all custom made so the final energy efficiency will depend on which package you order. You can pick less expensive packages that will be less efficient or more expensive packages that will be more efficient. Your dealer or salesperson should be able to explain the options so you can pick a solution that works for you. If the salesman is not able to explain the options clearly you should look for another company. There are plenty of fish in the sea.

Why do people buy Great Lakes windows?

Usually people buy Great Lakes windows because the salesman suggest this product line. Most customers have never heard of Great Lakes windows and there’s nothing wrong with that. Most customers have never heard of most window brands which is why they turn to replacement window reviews to find the best option for their home. We can help with information on all US window manufacturers. Have more questions? Let us know.

Replacement Window FAQ

If you have questions about windows we have answers. Our replacement window FAQ page is the best resource on the entire internet. We’ll start out with some questions and answers to get the ball rolling. If you have questions that have not yet been answered post a common below and we’ll answer your questions for everyone to see.

What is the best window frame material?

Common window frame materials are vinyl, composite, fiberglass and wood.

For most residential projects vinyl windows are the best option. Vinyl windows will be durable, energy efficiency and cost effective. Fiberglass and composite windows will generally be more expensive and less efficient with higher air infiltration rates. Wood windows are also more expensive and they need more upkeep. That is why vinyl windows make up a huge share of the market.

Are block and tackle balances better than constant force balances?

Yes. Windows with upgraded hardware like block and tackle balances are general considered to be nicer windows. The upgraded hardware is typically tested to last longer and operate better.

Can you get prices for windows online?

Yes. In the past you could only get prices for replacement windows from an in-home salesperson. That was a process that many customers were unhappy with. Now you can get prices for windows online with no pushy salesman in your living room. You can get a window quote completely online here.

Are all windows custom made?

No. Most companies that make windows for remodeling projects will use custom made windows. This is the case because every house is different and the windows need to fit into the existing openings without modifying the walls.

New construction windows will often come in standard sizes since builders can just plan for the standard sizes when designing the house.

Do all windows use virgin vinyl?

Yes. Almost all replacement windows available today will use virgin vinyl in the frames and sashes. Window salesmen will still try to scare people by saying that “the other guys” use recycled or regrind vinyl, but that’s just not true. It hasn’t been true for a very long time. Find common window sales tactics here and info on virgin vinyl here.

How much should windows cost in 2023?

As with everything in 2023 prices for replacement windows are up. The exact pricing can vary quite a lot based on the nature of the project and the amount of commission the salesman wants to make. In general basic vinyl replacement windows will run between $700 and $110o per window installed. Some features and options can be more expensive. Find more info on 2022 window prices here.

How long does it take to get new windows in 2022?

The supply chain issues of 2021 and 2022 have impacted replacement windows. Most manufacturers are on extended lead times due to covid issues and increased demand. In the last custom windows would routinely be available in 2-3 weeks. Today that’s likely to be a bit longer. In our company we’re seeing projects completed 10-14 weeks from when the customer placed the order. Some product lines can take even longer. It’s important to ask your dealer or installer for timing estimates. Find more info on how long it takes to get windows in 2022 here.

What are the best replacement windows to get in 2022?

The best high quality windows of 2022 are:
1. Gentek Signature Elite
2. Revere Berkshire Elite
3. Okna 600 Series
4. Sunrise

There are many models out there and the best option for you will depend on the local dealer offering the windows. There is no need to buy windows from a dealer you don’t like or a dealer who doesn’t treat you well. You can always find someone else offering a perfectly good solution.

What is a good window warranty?

Most nicer window companies will offer lifetime warranties on their windows. That means the warranty will last as long as you own the house and it may be transferable when you sell the house.

Some window manufacturers will offer glass breakage warranties too which can be a very nice feature. Sometimes this warranty is included and sometimes it’s available for an additional cost. Be sure you ask your dealer for the warranty info so you know what to expect down the road.

Can you buy replacement windows online?

Absolutely. There’s no need to deal with some pushy window salesman sitting in your living room. You can order windows completely online. Then they’ll be custom measured, custom manufactured and professionally installed. This service is available in most of the country and you can find information and get an online window quote here.

Do all replacement windows have double strength glass?

No. Most nicer replacement windows will come with double strength glass, but cheaper options will not. For example, many Simonton models will come standard with single strength glass since these are cheaper windows.

Double strength glass is thicker which makes it stronger and more durable. You should pick double strength glass when available as it will make for a better result.

Do replacement windows go on sale?

No. Often times pushy in-home salesmen will tell you there is a sale that just so happens to expire today. They tell everyone this so that they can try to get you to sign a contract on the spot with no time to think it over. This is just a window sales gimmick and is not based in reality. It is also a sign that you’re getting a bad deal as people selling a good value don’t need to play sill games like that.

Is a neighborhood discount on windows a good deal?

No. This is a sales gimmick that has been used for decades and it is typically a sign that the company is trying to manipulate you. There are many window companies who will send out teams of people to canvas a neighborhood. They knock on doors and tell everyone that they’re working in the neighborhood and can offer special pricing while they’re in the area. They say this to everyone, there is nothing special about the pricing. In fact these companies are usually the most expensive companies in the area. Find window sales tactics here and lies told by window salesmen here.

Why are window salesmen so annoying?

It’s just the nature of the business. Typically home improvement projects are sold by commission salespeople so they need to close the deal in order to get paid. They usually have a lot of discretion when pricing the projects and they get paid more commission when they sell the projects for a higher cost.

This is a very old fashioned business model. Many companies, like Window Universe, are moving away from that model and are offering clear and transparent pricing. This is still the exception as most window companies are still living in the past.

Are fiberglass windows better than vinyl windows?

No. The only real advantage to fiberglass windows is the look. They can look very nice. The downsides are that fiberglass windows are more expensive than vinyl windows and they’re often less efficient with higher (worse) air infiltration rates.

Fiberglass window salesmen will make claims about the strength, durability or the expansion and contraction. None of that is based in reality. The only real advantage of a fiberglass window is the look. If the look is not worth the substantially higher cost then vinyl will make more sense. Vinyl windows are the most popular type by a wide margin.

Does argon gas leak out of a window over time?

No. Sometimes customers worry that the argon gas will leak out of their windows and they won’t know it. They are afraid that they’ll be left with less efficient windows and won’t be aware that anything has happened. That’s not how it works.

If the seal were to fail on an insulated window the argon gas could leak out. In that case something would need to leak into the glass unit to fill the space. If outside air gets into an insulated glass unit there will be moisture or condensation between the panes of glass. You’ll know it right away and that would be covered by the warranty on most replacement windows.

Is it easy to replace a window sash?

Yes. Most manufacturers design their windows to be very easy to service. If you have a window that breaks or a seal failure with moisture between the panes you can typically order a new sash from the manufacturer and install it yourself in a matter of minutes.

If you don’t know the original manufacturer or if they are no longer in business this gets much more difficult as a replacement sash won’t be available. In that case you can order a new insulated glass unit and install it into the existing sash. This can be harder and may require a professional, or at least an adventurous DIY type of person.

What is Low-e glass?

Low-e stands for low emissivity and it means there’s a coating on the glass that reflects the heat from the sun. This is something that is offered by every window manufacturer and it’s required by the building codes in many areas. Low-e glass makes the windows substantially more energy efficient.

How can you find a good window company?

Finding a good window company is harder than ever these days. The barrier to entry is low so there are always new companies who say they’re the best but they might really be much riskier than you think.

You can find our recommendations for the best window companies in the country right here. That’s the best resource we know of for finding the best replacement window company.

Yes. The Simonton window models can be tricky to understand. They’ll sell the same windows under different brands to try to help their dealers differentiate themselves. Preservation Windows FAQ

Find our Preservation Windows FAQ below. Here we’ll look at all of the common questions we get about Preservation windows. If you have a question that isn’t answered we invite you to post a comment at the bottom to ask your question. We read all of the comments and will be happy to answer your question for everyone to see.

Does Alside make Preservation windows?

No, Preservation windows are made by Associated Materials, Inc based out of Cuyahoga Falls, OH. AMI also owns Alside, Revere, Gentek, and several other building products brands.

Are Preservation windows any good?

Yes, Preservation windows are perfectly good vinyl replacement windows. They are often sold by high priced dealers which can mean they are frequently overpriced relative to other options in the market. So, the windows are fine, but they can sometimes be too expensive. You can find an alternative option and get a quote online right here.

Where are Preservation windows made?

Preservation windows are made at the Associated Materials plant in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. From there Preservation windows are distributed all over the country through a network of dealers. There will usually only be one dealer in each city. They do that to prevent price competition allowing the dealers to charge a premium for the products. This is one reason that Preservation windows are often overpriced.

Do Preservation windows use block and tackle balances?

Yes, Preservation windows including the Preservation Reserve model use upgraded hardware including block and tackle balances. This is the type of hardware used on most higher end replacement windows.

Are Preservation windows overpriced?

Often times they are. The business model for Preservation windows includes selling them through only one dealer in each town. This allows that dealer to charge a premium price and avoid price competition in the market. That’s not always great for the customer.

What is the warranty on Preservation windows?

Preservation windows come with a lifetime warranty that covers the windows, frames, glass, etc for as long as you own the house. The Preservation warranty is also transferable when you sell the house.

What is the difference between Preservation and Preservation Reserve?

The Preservation Reserve line is a newer model and in my opinion it’s the superior option. The older Preservation line has higher (worse) air infiltration rates and uses a thicker frame that blocks more light. The Preservation Reserve line addresses these issues.

Sometimes dealers will try to charge more for the older design, but that doesn’t necessarily make sense in many cases.

How much should Preservation windows cost?

The retail pricing for Preservation windows is determined by the local dealer. These windows are often sold at very high prices making them a bad value. It’s always possible to get a fair deal, but not very likely in my experience. I would suggest looking at other models to find a better value. You can find detailed window reviews and info here.

Are Preservation Reserve windows the same as Gentek Signature Elite windows?

Yes. These two models are basically the same. There are some minor differences in the glass packages offered, but there is very little difference in efficiency or anything else. The Gentek Signature Elite model will usually be a better value.

You can often times find a much better price for Gentek Signature Elite windows and you can also get a quote online with no runaround from a window salesman. You can find more info on the online quotes here.

Does Preservation make new construction windows?

No. Preservation is a replacement window line. They do offer the the Preservation Reserve line with a nail fin for a new construction application, but the product line is primarily designed for the replacement window market.

How long does it take to get Preservation windows?

It can take a while. The Preservation windows are all custom made so it can take several weeks for the windows to be produced and delivered to the local dealer. The demand can vary quite a bit throughout the year so your dealer can tell you more about the current lead times. It will typically take at least 3-4 weeks for the windows to arrive and it can take longer.
