    1. Joe Wiener says:

I bought 55 Gorell double hung replacement windows several years ago and need 6 pains of glass replaced. As far as I know they went out of business in 2012. How did you get them replaced under warranty?

  3. chris l. bowman says:

Who is the best replacement window company in Tidewater Va.?
    I live in Hampton, Va.

    1. I used American Builders for my mother-in-law’s windows for her house in Suffolk. Great windows for the price. Installation was quick and flawless – and they cleaned up afterwards.

  4. I live near two highways and the noise from the trucks between 2-7 am is absolutely horrible. I feel like I am sleeping right on the highway as the trucks pass me by. We have Certainteed windows but it does not block any sound. It is an old house (85 yrs old) but the windows are relatively new (installed by previous owner). This noise waked me and my kids up daily. We live in Maryland. Can you please make suggestions for window soundproofing or replacement windows that will block the noise? Thanks so much!

    1. thewindowdog says:

Hi Georgia, our company may be able to help you out. I’ll send you an email right now.

      1. Doris Robitaille says:

I have a sound issue next to a plant within 150 feet with trucks starting at 4 am. I need replacement sound proof Windows. I live in Austin Tx. What brand and style would you recommend or installer.? The rest of my house has Eagle wood/ aluminum clad Windows and doors. Thank you,

        1. thewindowdog says:

You should compare your options looking at the STC ratings to see how well they’ll block sound. Many manufacturers offer laminated glass which will help quite a bit. Some companies do make products that go beyond typical residential windows. Depending on how loud the trucks are you may want to look for a commercial type product.

Remember, you’re getting sound through your walls and your ceiling too. Windows are only part of the equation.

          1. Samuel Pelletier says:

We had a few Alside Seabrooks windows installed in 2010 by Wilson’s in fort smith Arkansas back in 2010. We are looking to have the same windows installed to replace our other windows. In looking at you web site the Alside Seabrooks is no longer available. We are wanting windows that are made with the same frames. We don’t want different styles of windows offsetting each other side by side. It will not look well. Wilson’s no longer works in NW Arkansas. Are you able to help us.
            Thanks Sam

          2. thewindowdog says:

Hi Sam, I wonder if Alside Seabrook was a private label window back then. To my knowledge Alside never made a window called Seabrook. Do you happen to have a brochure or any info about them from back then? Alside still makes most of the same windows they made in 2010 so the chances are decent you will be able to order something that will match or at least be pretty similar to the windows you have.

      2. Does anyone know what performance series windows are. I was sold these for a bay front house and they leak like crazy and rattle in there frame when the wind blows. Didn’t see them on the list but they are Alside. We paid a huge amount of money but they just want to replace with the same thing. Didn’t work the first two times. Starting to think lawyer.

      3. James Robert Cox says:

Hello Window Dog: My name is James. I live on the eastern shore of Virginia close to Maryland. I’m in need of soundproof windows for my bedroom. They’re about to build eight chicken houses next to my house. I have a bay-type window (1-Large in the middle with two regular windows on each side.

      4. mark hood says:

Hello my name is Mark Hood and I live in Saint Louis Missouri. I had Traco view safe windows installed years ago . My actual warranty says that the company will pay 50 percent of window replacement if my windows seals ever become compromised. Lol. Well I now have 4 that have given out to age. What are the odds of finding simple replacements for at least the 4 ? They should be a common size. Thank you Mark Hood. 314-698-0363. Please please respond

        1. thewindowdog says:

Hi Mark, I don’t think that will be hugely difficult. Unfortunately you probably won’t get any support from Traco, but a glass company can probably replace the glass in the windows. Sometimes the hardest part is matching the low-e so the color looks the same and matching the grids. It’s not always as easy to replace just the glass as people expect but it can usually be done. If you go to this page enter your zip code and then select glass repair it should connect you with a local company who can handle it.

Let us know how it goes.

    2. Sherri Fiorillo says:

Your 85 year old home probably does not have good wall insulation nor Insulated Siding. Replacing windows did not help your walls. Sorry. Need to upgrade siding.

Getting ready to replace 10 windows in our house. Three years ago we replaced two because of a storm that damaged them. We replaced them with Viwinco. They seem to be doing the job but I have heard some not very nice things about these windows. Our house faces mostly north and south and we get no sun at all in the front but a lot in the back especially during the winter. We live in St.Charles, MO. What window would you suggest? We are getting ready to call the contractor. Thanks much. Marv

  18. Chuck McGehee says:

What is difference between V2500 and V4500 windows?

    1. thewindowdog says:

Are you talking Jeld-Wen vinyl windows? If so I don’t deal with them too often so I’m not an expert on those models. In my experience the Jeld-Wen vinyl windows leave a lot to be desired. We use their wood windows in our store, but never the vinyl. I’ll be able to get you a quote on a much nicer option.

  19. Frank Dunbar says:

Let me start out by saying that nothing is more important than architectural integrity. I have 10 windows that are double hung under a (currently perfect) half circle transom. A home up the street from me with similar windows replaced them and the half circle transom turned into a tiny crescent that, in my mind, destroyed the architectural integrity of the home.
I selected a couple of window brands from your site and contractors from Angie’s List. No problems there and I have been working more closely with one of the contractors. I challenged the contractor and he brought out to show me a full install unit with the double hung and transom above. Of course, it looked much like the one up the street and I immediately said “that is not going is this house.” So, here is the question to you – can I retain the basic architectural appearance of the home with replacement windows? Got any suggestions? Where should I go next? Is my only option new construction windows? Please give me some help.

    1. thewindowdog says:

I’d say it depends on the house, the current windows and the type of new windows you’re looking at. We replace half circle windows all the time and we put in new half circle windows. Not sure why they would be changing the shape.

It is possible if you have thin metal frames currently that new vinyl windows will be a little thicker. They could reduce the glass area, but shouldn’t change the shape.

Did they tell you why it was doing that?

  20. Looking to find the best reputable window company & installers in the Palmdale, CA area. Any suggestions?

  21. Bernadette Keaggy says:

I had Home Depot replace a couple windows in our 1989 home. It was an Anderson window and I was very pleased. vinyl . Now I’m needing rest of house done and trying to decide between Home Depot using Anderson vinyl, window world, or independent company, in Nashville, Tn. I really like the Anderson vinyl that is white on inside and outside is taupe that matches all my trim.

  22. Any recommendations on windows in the Denver market.

    1. thewindowdog says:

Yes! Check out our page on the best window companies here and you’ll find our recommended company in Denver. I’m headed to Thornton tomorrow. It’s beautiful in the mountains in the fall.

  23. Hi- I recently sat thru a sales pitch for The Power Company for windows. I thought the presentation was very interesting but the “sell” was so hard it was difficult to trust. I live in a 1948 home and have double pained windows now but you can put a can of soda on the window Sil and it will still be cold the next day. Any thoughts on their windows? I heard they wer a version of the Northeast Products window. Thank you – Long Island NY

    1. thewindowdog says:

Any company that pushes too hard to get the deal is telling you that they know the deal is no good. A company that has a good deal doesn’t need to push so hard. Unfortunately I don’t know any great companies on Long Island, but I would love to find one to recommend. If you find a winner let us know!

  24. Steve Owens says:

What distinguishes the three, wood, Jeld-Wen double hung window lines from one another ? W-2500, W-4500 and Siteline. Are each a relic of a defunct company since acquired by Jeld Wen ? Numer of options offered for each line ? Etc…Do the price differentials reflect the respective quality of the lines.
    Thanks

    1. thewindowdog says:

W-2500 is the cheapest. It’s a decent option if you want simple windows for a simple house. Siteline is nicer and has more options. The custom line is the top of the line. When we do high profile projects for celebrities and government type buildings we always use the Custom line. They’re expensive and take a while to arrive, but they’re nice windows.

  25. I’m in the process of replacing over 20 windows of my 50 year old home in the Southern Tennessee area. Is there an “Independent Rating” website that can help me evaluate all the quotes and products I have been offered? Thanks.

    1. thewindowdog says:

Not really. We’re about the most independent site out there and I do own a window company myself. We now operate almost nationwide and we started the company 10 years ago. Let me know if I can help out.

      1. barbara flowers says:

looking for the most cost efficient windows for a house we are building in Pensacola Fl. are you in this market? Thanks

        1. thewindowdog says:

Hi Barbara, I know I already emailed you the info, but wanted to write back for everyone to see. My company is not in Pensacola, but we can arrange for the windows to ship to Birmingham for pickup. It’s a bit of a drive, but might be worth it for a great deal!

  26. Elaine Livesey says:

Hello: How can my contractor purchase Okna 500 Windows for new construction in Florida? It doesn’t look like they have any dealers in this state?

    1. thewindowdog says:

Just pick something else. It’s a mistake to fall in love with a product and then work with a bad dealer. If your contractor is not a dealer then he can’t buy them from anywhere. Don’t worry, there are plenty of fish in the sea.

  27. Greetings WindowDog,

What are your thoughts on WeatherShield Signature Series Casement Windows?

    Thank you for your knowledge!

    1. Also wondering if anyone has any knowledge of the best window installers in the South Jersey area or more specifically Cherry Hill, NJ

      Thanks Again!

    2. thewindowdog says:

I like the WeatherShield wood windows. We deal with them in some of our stores with good success.

  28. Frank Flint says:

Can you provide a list of companies that make fiberglass windows. I like the Marvin Integrity but there brick mold option is bad and they don’t offer half round options. I am doing complete tear outs and they way my framing is I need a back set to the brick. When you go to the aluminum clad the pricing go’s way up. Looking for options.

    1. thewindowdog says:

What do you like about fiberglass windows? I tend to see mostly drawbacks when I look at them.

  29. Sue Gaudette says:

Trying to find decent-quality vinyl replacement windows and a reliable installer on the Eastern Shore, about 10 minutes from Ocean City. Any recommendations?

    1. thewindowdog says:

Hi Sure, that’s a little far from our office in Baltimore and I don’t know anyone out there to recommend. Maybe someone else will chime in with a recommendation.

  30. Lannie Mercer says:

I live in Ocala, Fl. Who are the best window companies to deal with here as far as product, price and reputation.

  31. Hail damage got my beautiful extra Large Bay Window. Accent Window’s in Denver mad this great double hung 58.5 x 141.5 Bay Window. I cannot find a honest salesperson who can sell me a replacement window. They come quote a price and tell me there manufacturer can make a Bay like Window like mine. Then they cancel the contract because there manufacturer can’t do it. Found out it’s mainly the cable system that will not hold a large Bay like this, so I was told by AMI and Amerimax. I need to find a manufacturer who is cable and able to make this Bay window.

  32. Looking for reliable window dealers in central NJ area. Have talked to Bellari about Sunrise windows (Restoration series) Is there anything comparable?? How good are the Sunrise windows. Never heard of them. First time buying replacement windows. Looking for 9 double hung windows, a new patio door set up and new bow window in front of house.
    Thanks
    john T

  33. Rhonda Lovoll says:

We are looking for replacement windows vs new construction windows. We have to replace all the windows in the house. We can feel the cold and warm air. In the winter they leak and we can feel a breeze around them. Also they don’t stay open and have to be propped open. Many are difficult to close all the way. I’ve read many reviews on your site and it seems that Anderson are highly recommended by many people. However, I don’t know whether to get wood, vinyl or something else. We live in Michigan with really cold winters and very rainy summers. I can and will look on Angies list for contractors but I just don’t know which type of window is the best for keeping the cold and heat out. We live in an old house 1950 and it has poor insulation already. It’s also a brick house. I’m not as concerned about looks as I am efficiency and durability. Which Anderson window would you recommend? It sounds like we should get windows that aren’t replacement but as if they’re going in a new build, is that possible and a good idea?

    1. thewindowdog says:

Hi Rhonda, I completely understand that shopping for new windows can feel challenging. If not feeling the cold air in the winter is a concern you’ll probably want to look for windows with a low air infiltration rate. Andersen double hung windows tend to be much higher (worse) than a nice vinyl window. For example, the last rating I saw as a Renewal by Andersen Fibrex window with an air infiltration rate over 0.20. That’s 5x more than you’d get with a nicer vinyl window. Doesn’t mean the Andersen are bad products, but if air infiltration is a big deal for you, you might want to look elsewhere.

  34. Where are Window World windows manufactured? Are they an amalgam of manufacturers? Here in the USA or abroad?

    Thanks.

    1. thewindowdog says:

From what I’ve seen they use different windows in different areas. Generally all lower end options. All made in American as far as I’m aware. The lead time is an issue with custom windows so it would be hard to make them in China and then wait 2 months for them to come over on a boat. Pretty much all replacement windows are made in the USA, sometimes Canada.

  35. Window Dog information is a bit outdated. Kensington HPP now produces the Genesis, Ascent, and Meridian vinyl replacement window models as of May 2020. Ascent and Meridian are available with Heat Mirror Glass (developed at MIT) that blocks 99% of UV, adds little weight to the window. The Empire State Building was retrofited with Heat Mirror Glass and estimated to have saved around $400,000 in energy expenses. Advantages of permanently heat welded vinyl frames and sashes over Renewal By Andersen is that Fibrex (recycled wood mixed with polymers) frames relies on adhesives and/or screws at joints. Latest offerings from Kensington HPP deserve a serious consideration and review.

  36. Tiffany Reilly says:

I live in Wisconsin, my house is 100+ years old. I am looking to replace 12 original windows. My preference is a wood window, but have gotten some vinyl quotes too.
    Vinyl quotes:
$14,467 Kensington Ascent double pane w/heat mirror
    $23,076 ProVia Endure double pane
    $8,000 ProVia Endure
    $18,685 Starmark EVO 7500
    Wood quotes:
    $12,586 Marvin Ultimate
    $21,000 Pella Architect
    What do you recommend?

  37. Cyn Mauldin says:

We are replacing the front of an old closed-in ground floor porch of old cottage, so it will need to be new construction windows. So it will be reduced down to 5 windows about 32-34 wide by 54” high. It is 1 block off the southeastern North Carolina coast. Not sure what level of impact resistant windows are required or allowable and what window is best and a price range to budget for.

  38. I purchased renewal by Andersen and way to expensive for what they offer. Sorry,I was a idiot! Still getty ladybugs coming thru my windows in the spring!

  39. Hello All, so far this website has been very helpful. I am in the market to replace my house siding and all windows (over 30 windows). I live in central new jersey around the new brunswick area and looking for good windows/installer. I have had the contractor pj fitzpatrick come by offering provia windows.
As others have said, this business has prices all over the place maki g it difficult to know if I am getting ripped off or not.

      1. Thank you. Well that company quoted me 30 windows at $1500 a piece for $45,000. They said the price is high because they all include full framing and any repairs necessary to the opening to complete the installs with no “extra” costs due to issues with the install. These were provia endure windows with divided panes (inside glass) on the top window.
I told them it was not affordable for me and then was offered a 30 day special. Which brought the price to $41,000. I still said that price was not good. He left and I then got a text from the project manager saying they have some additional discounts to bring the price down. All said, they do seem to have a solid reputation and reviews but it is too rich for my budget.
Thank you so much for the resources you give on the page and I will certainly check out the link you supplied.

  40. I live in Edgewater Md 21037. What window company would you recommend?

  41. Any professional high quality replacement windows with installation in central Iowa? Looked at ProVia Endure 600EN. Not sure what else is available that works for a mobile home (1995). Thanks for any ideas!
