3 years ago I had 15 triple pane windows with Low E argon installed in my house just north of Winnipeg. In addition to the extremely toxic caulk, I experienced condensation and then ice inside my electrically (dry) heated house. There was no permanent manufacturer’s identification on the windows, as legally required. I had saved the removable stickers. The u value was 1.52 up to 1.63 for these new triple pane windows. I removed one window and measured the width of the unit. 11/16 inch. In Canada the minimum space between panes is 12.7mm or approx 1/2 inch. Home Depot claimed the higher u value meant I had better thermal protection than if it had been lower.
For 3 years I have been attempting to find out what was wrong with my new triple pane windows. Now I have knowledge and proof they did fraud by providing illegal windows that function less than dual pane. I have been told low e argon does not work with such a small space between panes. (3/8 for 3 glass panes and 5/16 inch for 2 air spaces). the company has threatened me, evaded, hung up on my phone calls, lied extensively, attempted to tell me I ordered a specific brand not anywhere on their website or in the store displays, attempted to extort additional money from me (>$6000.00) etc. They thought 2 seniors would be OK with this fraud. I am not but 2 binders of letters, numerous phone calls, visits to stores etc, they told me today they are instructed not to talk to me and the case is closed. Upon phoning a store in Vancouver, they told me they will do everything to help me as this is terrible. This has been very stressful. Thread of the Canada company, Jeff Kinnaird apparently just got promoted and there is a new person in charge of Canada. I tried to contact VP Western Canada, Jeff Hastings, hence the phone call to Vancouver. The windows had Energy Star and CSA ratings on the removable stickers and they seem, I have been told, to be not correct for triple pane windows. Some of the windows are very large:66 X31 inches. It was suggested that with the narrow width of the unit, the glass should have been thicker and the space between panes wider to ensure safety. I am/was concerned they could collapse and injure my grandchildren. The salesman told me to not even consider any legal action as they have a large legal department. Home Depot told me my house had humidity too high. Wen I got a triple pane window installed in the same room from a different company there was no condensation ever and certainly no ice. When I spoke to Jeld Wen window
manufacturer recently, they told me no one would order triple pane with a width of 11/16 inch or even 7/8 inch as it says on the stickers. I just wanted
energy efficient windows for Manitoba. Do you have any suggestions as to how to persuade Home Depot to decide to honour their contract and provide 15 triple pane windows as they originally told me they would do? They advertise worry free and results guaranteed. Also, Lifetime warranty. I hope you do not list Home Depot as a good company for Manitoba.

Hi Elizabeth, I’m sorry to hear about your trouble. You might consider that houses heated with electric baseboard type heat or other methods that don’t involve forced air can be some of the most humid environments around. Since there’s no way for the moisture in the air from cooking, showering, breathing, etc to get out it just builds up until condensation forms at the coldest point which is often a window.

I remember a house I saw once in Richmond VA with electric baseboard heat. There was horrible condensation all over the windows and the customer was convinced the windows were horrible. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the new windows. The condensation had not formed on the old windows because they were drafty enough to let air transfer. Dry air came in and moist air got out. When the old windows were replaced and much tighter windows were installed the condensation issue started.

It seems unlikely a company installed illegal windows. I hope you’re able to find a great solution. I’d start with a dehumidifier and see how that goes.
