I am elderly so won’t live in this house another 10 years. Our area has lots of wind and dirt. Summers are pretty warm—no where near Phoenix hot. Winters can get cold—more below freezing that not, but days will quickly warm with highs in low 70’s with an occasional 80+ thrown in. Question is vinyl or aluminum. One installer pushes Simmonton, vinyl while the other is aluminum by Young. I want single hung.
In the olden days vinyl windows couldn’t be used in the harsh climate of the southwest which is why aluminum windows remain popular there. Luckily newer vinyl windows work great in that environment and are typically substantially less expensive than aluminum. There may be a time when aluminum windows make sense, if you’re looking for a specific color or a very large size for example, but in most cases vinyl will be a great option.
Hey WindowDog, any thoughts on MI’s Homemaker 3 windows? I can’t find any reviews online, and yet there seem to be a lot of companies here in the Albuquerque area that sell them. My sense is they’re just a souped-up builders grade window but maybe I’m wrong about that. The price seems good, 6 windows and a patio slider for $3400 installed. I tend to think the milgard Tuscany is a better window but at $5,000 installed, I’m not sure they’re good enough to warrant the extra $1600. Do you have any opinions either way?
Hello, we live in Albuquerque and looking to replace original 30 year old aluminum windows. We got a $60,000 quote for 20 windows from Renewal by Anderson. We also got a $11,000 quote for vinyl windows by a ‘guy’ several of our neighbors used. We were very impressed with how little heat the Anderson windows let through by the heat lamp demonstration. Our house gets very hot upstairs even with our new A/C. Even with solar panels, we can still pay upwards of $200 in a month in electrical in summer. So you can see why energy efficient windows are appealing. But what I don’t know is if those vinyl windows will block that heat or not. Or is there something in btwn we should consider?
Hi Kelly, luckily there’s an easy way to compare how well windows will block heat from the sun. You can ask both companies for the SHGC rating and that will show you the difference. A lower rating means it blocks more heat. Both companies probably offer several options and I don’t think the Renewal by Andersen people have any special glass, just a fancy demonstration. You’ll likely find the efficiency ratings to be very similar to other options.

DO NOT USE DON’S WINDOWS in Albuquerque, since Don’s wife took over nothing but problems . I used Don’s several years ago and everything was good. Look at the reviews they have gone down hill. I got an estimate and the new owner spent 40 minutes telling me how she put a hex on her sister and other unusual thing that had no business on a sales call. When she called to follow up I put someone else on hold to tell her I would call back later and she screamed at me that I was being rude to her and hung up.
So even if they had the greatest windows for the best price I do not want to deal with her.
