Who measures and installs the windows?
Another great question. All of our projects in Pittsburgh are professionally measured and installed by the manufacturer’s installation service. This means that the window manufacturer will take the exact measurements and then handle the installation as well. It’s a great way to make sure you get a quality result.

Ha, your guess is as good as mine. I can only assume that if a company was proud of the value they offered they’d be happy to share their pricing. If they’re not so proud they may be a little reluctant. I talk to a lot of people about windows. Probably too many, but that’s a story for another day. Today is a story about a reader who asked me about Simonton window complaints.
The reader was from Florida where my company doesn’t currently offer windows so I wasn’t trying to sell anything. I was just trying to be helpful. She had read some Simonton window complaints online and was concerned that she would be unhappy if she ordered Simonton windows.
As an aside, I did recently write another post about Alside window complains where we talked about how the end user of the window typically don’t know a lot about windows and will often assign the blame for an issue in the wrong place. I won’t repeat that topic, but you can find that post here.
There are several factors to consider when opinions from folks online, whether they’re “experts” or customers. One is that you can find someone in the world who is unhappy with anything. They could be giving out free Rolls Royce’s and someone would write “one star, too comfortable”. There is someone out there who really will complain about anything. Have you seen the complaints that people write about national parks? They’re hilarious.
The important factor to keep in mind is scale.
You see Simonton is a pretty big window manufacturer. They make millions of windows and probably have millions of customers. Some percentage of customers will be less than pleased with any product. That’s not unusual and it’s not very important.
Think about it this way. If Company A has 1,000,000 customers and has 100 window complaints online they have an unhappiness rate of 0.01%. You could read 100 negative reviews and think it’s bad, but I think we’d all call an unhappiness rate of 0.01% pretty good.
If Company B has 200,000 customers and has 40 window complaints they would have less than half as many window complaints online. You might be a casual googler and think that you find much less negativity about Company B so they must be better. You see less than half as many unhappy people so it would be easy to assume that Company B is better.
You don’t realize that they’re 1/5 the size.
In fact, company B has an unhappiness rate of 0.02%. That means they have twice as many unhappy customers as a percentage of the total. That is much worse, but it looks better when you’re googling. It’s tricky to navigate.
If you were to hire Company B you’d be twice as likely to be unhappy about something at the end of your project, but you’d have no way of knowing that at the beginning.
The moral of the story is that it can be very easy for a small manufacturer to look great online. That doesn’t mean they’re actually great.
Should I work with a larger company or a smaller company?
When thinking about window manufacturers I always suggest working with larger and more well established companies. I don’t recommend Simonton windows too frequently but they are an example of a large brand that has been around for a long time and likely will be around for many years to come. Even if you read some Simonton window complaints it doesn’t’ mean they’re making a bad product. It just means they’re large.
It’s very easy for small manufacturers to pop on the scene, sign up a handful of dealers, get them to write great feedback online and the window manufacturer looks great. Then they hit a financial challenge for one reason or another, they don’t have any resources and they close their doors.
Unfortunately this happens all the time and it leaves people who thought they were buying windows from a very well respected manufacturer completely out of luck with no warranty or access to replacement parts. When you see people complaining that a lifetime warranty isn’t really lifetime this is usually the cause. If the company goes belly up you have no warranty.
So, how should I decide who to work with?
The window business is challenging, that’s for sure. Every company says they’re the best and they all say that everyone else is horrible. It can feel difficult to navigate, but luckily it’s really not that hard.
I always suggest starting with a company with a good reputation and a solid track record. Then listed to what they have to suggest. Ask any questions about it, ask about options both more expensive and less expensive. When you feel like they’re offering a reasonable value that fits your needs you should buy it.

The Provia Aspect window model is designed to be a “mid-range” replacement window option. That can be a tricky term to define. Did Provia produce a good quality window product at an affordable price or a stripped down version of their nicer Provia Endure model? We’ll find out.
First, it’s important to note that the wholesale cost difference between a “mid-range” and a “high-end” replacement window is typically pretty small. We’re talking something like $20-$40 difference in cost per window for the contractor. That’s a little secret I’m not supposed to share with you.
I know the salesman might show you a much larger price difference. It might be as high as $100 or $200 per window. Why does the salesman do that? It usually has more to do with his commission than anything else. Those door to door sales people can be tricky. If you’re seeing a wide retail price disparity someone is messing with you.
What about the Provia Aspect features?
The Aspect model is a decent window model. It doesn’t come with many of the features that you can get from other manufactures at similar prices. Because of that I’d tend to say it’s not a great value.
For example, it uses the cheaper constant force or coil balance mechanisms vs the nicer type used in nicer window models. Provia calls the cheaper balance “roller-tilt” which is a cute name but it’s not the best mechanism out there.
They’ll offer other features like 3-1/4″ jamb depths, sunshield vinyl, dual vent latches and more. Those features are all 100% common and easily found on almost any window model. There’s nothing to write home about there.
Ultimately there’s not really anything special about this product.
What are the color options?
The Aspect window is very limited in terms of available colors. If fact right now it’s only available in white, beige or sandstone.
If you want any other colors or woodgrain interior options you’ll need to upgrade to the more expensive Provia Endure line.
What about Provia Aspect prices?
Retail prices for replacement windows can be all over the map. If you could find windows like this for $300 per window that would be a great deal, but prices like that seem to be long gone.
I do think it’s important to remember that the windows will be in the house for decades. Getting a nicer quality product, even at a slightly higher price, will likely be a good move. In a couple years you won’t remember the price but you will still have the windows.
The salesman told me about Super Spacer, is that a good thing?
Spacers in windows are a common part of the sales pitch. Provia windows come with a non-metallic spacer called Super Spacer. This is the same type they use in the doors and it’s a nice product.
The friendly door to door salesman will likely leave out the fact that most window companies will offer a non-metallic spacer. It’s not really a differentiator but it is a good product.
Is the Provia Aspect warranty any good?
The warranty on these windows is perfectly decent but not too remarkable. If you think you might rent your house one day you might want to look for a different manufacturer because their warranty is very limited for a rental.
For a house that you’ll be living in the warranty is better. It’s a lifetime warranty and it’s transferable when you sell the house. It’s only transferable if you transfer it within 30 days of selling the house but that’s not really a huge deal.

So, what’s the bottom line?
I’d say this is definitely a window model that was designed to be cheap, but it’s not always sold at cheap prices. If you can find a nice low price it could be a fine deal, but Provia windows are often sold at higher prices. If you’re getting a quote in the $600+ per window range I’d say you can probably find a better value somewhere else.
When shopping for windows I do always suggest finding a great installation company before you fall in love with any particular window model. There are plenty of great window options out there but not as many local companies that are great to work with.

If you’re in Wisconsin you may have heard of a potential scandal involving a window company called Windows Select. It even sounds like the Green Bay Packers are involved. Let’s find out what’s going on.
For starters, this article from a local new outlet covers the issues pretty clearly. The accusations are that this company took deposits from hundreds of customers and is unable to pay their bills. This would potentially put them at risk of bankruptcy which would make their customers pretty nervous.
Lets start at the beginning
It seems the owner of Windows Select, Justin Kiswardi, had been involved in the Universal Windows Direct location in West Allis that had gone out of business. Here’s another article outlining some of the difficulties there.
Once that location had closed Justin opened Windows Select which also offers similar products and services.
It seems things started strong, but that didn’t last.
Problems at Windows Select
According to the article listed above Windows Select has received 66 BBB complaints in the last 12 months. That’s not ideal. It also says the owner of the company had previously been sentenced to three years in jail in Ohio for financial crimes. I’m a firm believer in rehabilitation, but it seems like there may be a pattern here.
They say that many customers report paying deposits for windows that were never ordered. If that’s the case it could be that the company is using deposits from one customer to pay for windows for another which is a tricky position to be in.
Are the delays from manufacturing?
Here’s a pretty unusual thing. It seems that the manufacturer Windows Select was using posted a negative google review about them.
Here it is:
The claim there is that Windows Select was blaming the delays on manufacturing. The manufacturer says they’re making the windows but not shipping them because of unpaid invoices. That’s not a great sign.
Why are the Greenbay Packers involved?
Well, it seems that the company was advertising with the Packers. They were offering things like free tickets when you get a quote for windows. It’s relatively common for home improvement companies to advertise with sports teams so that’s not a problem.
The companies pay the sports teams for the advertising. In this case it seems the company didn’t pay the advertising bills and the Packers have now cut ties with them. Again, not a great sign.
What’s happening now?
Towards the end of that article they mention that the company was setting up at a home and pet show in Kenosha just a few weeks ago. That would mean they’re still looking for new customers.
Finally, they do mention that the owner of the company denied most of these claims and offered to provide info that would explain things, but never did.
