We’ve written information on several now bankrupt window manufacturing companies, but the company formerly known as Republic Windows out of Chicago has done a better job of disappearing than most. Republic is the first company whose logo we can’t even find on Google. They’re really gone.
Republic Windows was one of several window manufacturing companies to go out of business in the last few years. We’re writing this page because we know that if you’re searching for Republic Windows you probably have old windows with a warranty or service issue. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but you’re out of luck.
It’s not uncommon for smaller window manufacturers to go out of business leaving customers high and dry, but Republic was a little unique. They went out at the hight of the financial crisis and the subsequent layoffs made national news. You can find info about the situation here and here and many other places in the google.
Republic windows received bailouts and subsidies and more. They were even featured in a documentary with a very emotional voiceover from Michael Moore. Unfortunately all of the financial help in the world couldn’t do anything to turn around their fortunes.
To avoid getting too political we’ll just mention that factories can’t stay open when customers aren’t buying the products. Customers don’t buy the products when they’re not very good products relative to the competition and all of the sit ins and occupying in the world won’t fix that.
The moral of the story here is that when you’re considering new windows it’s important to have some idea about the company manufacturing the products. It is not uncommon for smaller manufacturers to pop up almost overnight with fancy brochures and a great company story. These companies will sometimes convince so called experts that their windows are great and all of the sudden you’ll find great reviews online. These companies come and go, examples include Gorell, Schuco Kensington and more. In each case the end customers were left completely out of luck. Don’t be that guy.
