Vinyl and aluminum. PGT makes both vinyl and aluminum windows. Typically vinyl windows are more popular as they’re durable, energy efficiency and cost effective.
PGT says the windows are great, but we do see a lot of unhappy customers on the site. It’s possible that the customers we see writing in with problems with their PGT windows are just the squeaky wheels, but it does seem to be a pattern. As PGT has consolidated the window industry in Florida there are fewer and fewer options available for customers in this region.
The majority of the complaints we see relate to quality issues and challenges getting warranty issues resolved. We’ve seen people complaining about windows showing up defective from the plant. Then these folks seems to be having a challenging time getting the issues resolved.
Yes, but not more efficient than most other windows. Essentially all window manufacturers are playing with the same deck of cards. They all have access to the same glass, vinyl and components to design a window so there isn’t really any huge difference in efficiency between manufacturers. There are different packages and options available so you can pick the option that works best for your home.
Yes, PGT does offer both impact resistant windows and regular residential windows that are not impact windows. Impact windows are required in many areas in Florida and Texas. Sometimes people pick impact windows when they’re not required, but the cost can be substantial so they’re typically not used when not required by building codes.
All PGT windows will be custom made so they’ll take time to be custom made and delivered for installation. Extreme demand and supply chain issues have caused additional delays lately. We’ve heard of customers waiting 10 weeks to several months for their new windows to arrive. Find more info on how long it takes to get windows in 2022 here.
Pricing for replacement windows will vary quite a lot based on the options you pick, the nature of the installation and the amount of commission the salesman wants to make. Often times window salespeople have a lot of discretion when it comes to pricing projects and that can make the process difficult for the customer. PGT windows are available through many dealers in Florida and the surrounding area. In fact, we’ve heard from customers who are frustrated that PGT windows seem to be the only game in town. These customers feel like every dealer they talk to is selling the same PGT windows so it’s hard for them to get a comparison. In fact, there are many other options available, but it is true that PGT windows has a very high share of the residential window market in Florida.

Do PGT windows installed 10-20 years ago meet the current standards for storm resistance? When did they start etching the symbol into each window?
Hi Paul, I don’t know for sure, but I doubt it. Making windows meet the impact rating requirements is very expensive and would always be noted on the window. Nobody would spend all of that money to make windows qualify and then not identify them as qualifying. You can probably contact PGT with the serial number to get more info on the specific windows.
Let us know what they say, I’m sure you’re not the only person looking for that info.
