We’re getting ready to build a new home in Myrtle Beach, SC about 7 miles inland from the ocean. We want to install a good quality vinyl hurricane impact window. Our builder is recommending Viwinco or Plygem. The reviews we’ve found on Viwinco are mediocre at best. What windows do you recommend for new construction in coastal S.C.?

    1. Who did you end up choosing? I am buying a house in Myrtle that needs new windows. Would like to find a high quality window that doesn’t cost too much.

  2. My new constructed new home is a quality home. But the windows are Plygem windows and I have found lots of scratches on them, some fine, some worse. What is the warranty for those items. The builder said they would take care of anything we found, but since reviewing the windows, even with the Plygem rep visiting our home in a very hurried manner, they say they see the scratches but will not do anything about them. We can see some from 16 ft. away. The installer of the windows and the rep from Plygem have known each other for what sounds like decades, one got the other to work in this business with windows I believe. So when the installer, who probably scratched the glass is friends with the Plygem rep, what do we do? Also, they did admit the glass scratches could have been their glass manufacturer. But they won’t do anything. Should I get my attorney on top of this? Thank you.

I’d ask them for an explanation of the glass quality standards. It is true that some very minor imperfections are considered acceptable, but I would think something you can see from 16′ away might not meet that standard. They should have an official form that will explain what is acceptable and what is not. You may have to ask / demand that several times, but I’d start out being friendly about it and see where that takes you.

If you do get it, it would be great if you could email it over to us. I’m sure other readers will be interested as well. Typically something like that will have a clear definition so there’s not much subjectivity needed.

  3. I haven’t seen anything posted yet regarding reviews of Moss windows, new construction. Are they a good window (3600 series)? Also, do they make a good casement window?
Our home design calls for three casement windows. I’ll change it if we should stay away from said windows. Please advise asap.
Thank you for your help Window Dog!
