Can you explain the difference between ‘new construction’ windows and ‘replacement’ windows? My builder has and in my research it seems like the only difference is that new construction comes with extension jams. If you were building a home in Northern Illinois, what casement windows would you put in your house???!!!

Hi Brittany, the only functional difference between new construction and replacement windows is the way they’re designed to be installed. New construction windows will have a nail flange that goes around the perimeter and they’re designed to be installed before the siding or exterior trim. Replacement windows don’t have that nail flange because they’re designed to be installed through the jambs after the siding is installed.

There’s another difference to consider. New construction windows are typically sold to builders who are typically VERY price sensitive. That means the manufacturers make the windows cheaper to appeal to the builders and you get a lower quality product. On the other hand, replacement windows are sold to individual homeowners who want to upgrade their houses. Those folks are generally more interested in quality, efficiency, durability, and are willing to pay a little more to get a nicer product. Manufacturers know this so they make nicer replacement windows to appeal to that buyer.

So, the functional difference between new construction and replacement windows is pretty small, but the real world difference can be larger since nicer replacement windows are designed to be high quality products while new construction windows are often designed to be low priced products. Of course there are exceptions, but that’s the way it generally works.

Thank you! This gave me a lot of clarity! A LOT!! If I am wanting to put in high quality windows right out of the gate, what direction would you point me in? I am willing to spend the extra money now if it means I will be good for a long time. Are there a couple of brands you would lean towards? There are definitely more new replacement windows it appears. Would you ever put replacement windows in a new build?

What a useful site. We live in a 1932 DC area house and we are needing one replacement basement window as we no longer need the window ac unit in there at the moment. The other windows are certainteed sliders which have done really well but I gather that manufacturer no longer makes windows. Looking at big box store offerings I see that the widest they carry are 31″ and our opening is about 36″ by 17. I hope it isn’t custom but seems to have been standard for this era of houses. Many thanks for any recommendations locally.

Most every manufacturer makes custom sizes for no extra cost. In remodeling project basically everything is custom so it’s normal, it would be more unusual if a stock window did fit well in a replacement project. The best company I know of in the DC area is Window Universe. Find them at
